The History of the United States Power Squadron®

The Purpose and History of the USPS®
United States Power Squadron is the largest and most respected educational/fraternal boating organization in the world, covering 50 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Japan.  Our goal is the promotion of the highest standards of navigation and seamanship.

Members are families who contribute freely to their communities by promoting safe boating on the water and in the classroom.

Members of the Boston Yacht Club formed a Power Squadron of motorboat owning members in the early part of the last century when powered boats were starting to rival sail boats in popularity. The purpose of this early group was to train members in the skills of boating and navigation. This concept of boaters training each other became so popular that the United States Power Squadron was formed in 1914, and today the USPS has become the largest private boating organization in the world.

Today, membership is about equally divided among sail and power boaters, women are welcomed as regular members. The concept of helping each other has not changed through the years.

USPS has no paid members. Each new member is encouraged to take all the free courses he or she wishes and it is hoped that they, in turn, will help out with some form of pay back activity as time and opportunity permits.
